15 Makeup Tips No One Told You About

makeup tipsYou think you already have thorough knowledge about makeup after reading and watching a ton of tutorials and years of experience.  While you don’t have to be a professional makeup artist to know everything about makeup, there are some common makeup tips most women overlook even after years of experience.  With a few more tips and tricks, you can achieve that perfect makeup in just a few minutes. Here are some of those makeup tips you might not have heard about.

1. When choosing the right color of foundation, do not test at the back of your hand. More often than not, the face and the hand do not have the same shade. To know your right foundation shade, swipe product on your lower cheek or jaw line. If the foundation disappears, then that is your match!

2. When applying foundation, concentrate on areas that need more coverage, such as under the eyes, around the nose, t-zone, and other troubled areas that you may have, then blend outwards. Applying foundation on your entire face will just make it look like a mask.

3. You may have that perfect shade of lipstick, but it will not look good if your lips are dry and flaking. Do not peel off the hanging skin on your lips – it will just look worse. Try applying a lip balm or petroleum jelly on your lips and let it stay for a few minutes. Then, use a toothbrush to exfoliate and remove dead skin. You will have soft, smooth and plump looking lips afterwards.

4. If you are having a hard time doing the cat eye makeup look, use a piece of scotch tape to guide you as you draw your eyeliner or apply your eye shadow. This will also help you get balanced and even angles of the wings for both eyes.

5. To make eyes look bigger, bring out your white or nude eyeliner and use this on your waterline. This technique can make your eyes look more awake and bigger since it extends the whites of the eyes.

6. For brighter and beautiful eyes, use highlights. You can use white, cream or pearl eye shadow to highlight specific areas of the eye. To let your eyes pop, apply on the inner corner of the eyes, under your brow bone, and center of your eyelid.

7. Clumpy mascara can be caused by pumping the mascara wand into the tube. Instead of getting more product, you are actually pushing air inside. This will just dry out your mascara, hence the clumpy lashes every time you apply it. One easy fix is to put the mascara tube inside a mug with hot water. Let it stay for a couple of minutes to loosen and soften the product inside. Your mascara will be good as new for your next application.

8. When applying mascara on your bottom lashes, use a business card or plastic spoon to cover the skin under your eyes. This will prevent the mascara from transferring to your skin while it is still wet.

9. If you accidentally closed your eyes while your mascara is still wet and some of the product transferred to your skin, do not wipe off immediately. Let it dry and use a cotton swab to remove the mascara. You will notice how easy it is to pick up hardened mascara. Most of the time, you will not need to retouch your concealer or foundation.

10. All makeup products have expiration dates. Especially in hotter climates, makeup products can spoil easily. Therefore, it is important to keep them in a cool and dry place. For liquid and cream foundation and lipsticks, put them inside the fridge when not in use so you can extend their usage for a few more months.

11. Most women use eyeliner right above the eyelashes. Tight-lining is not so common because it is not that easy to do and not everyone knows that it can actually make a huge difference. If you want to define your eyes more and make your lashes appear fuller, apply  eyeliner in between the roots of the lashes. Tilt your head back and gently lift your lashes upwards with clean fingers. Use a waterproof pencil or gel liner and gently dab it in between each lash. You need to get as close to the root as possible.

12. Every time you wear eye shadow, you notice it creases by the end of the day. What can you do? Prime your eyes first. If your lids are not too oily, some concealers can work as your primer. On the other hand, you will need a good quality eye primer if you have very oily lids. Priming the eyes can also make the colors of your eye shadows more vibrant.

13. Applying false eyelashes can be time consuming and needs a bit of practice. If you want longer and fuller lashes, you can just use your curler, mascara, and powder. First, using an eyelash curler, clamp at the base of your lash line and press the curler lightly. Hold this for a few seconds before releasing. Move the curler halfway up the lashes and clamp and hold the curler again. For the final press, curl the tip of the lashes. After curling the lashes, you can now apply mascara. You can also use an eyelash primer first to prevent brittle and sparse lashes in the future. It also helps in making the lashes appear thicker and longer. When applying mascara, start at the base of your lashes in a zigzag motion and lightly brush up to the tips. You need to have a heavier coat of mascara at the base and a lighter coat towards the tips so that your lashes will not weigh down after a few hours. Keep in mind that too much product on the tips can be too heavy for the lashes. You can also apply a thin layer of loose powder in between coats of mascara to make the lashes look thicker and fuller.

14. If you want to curl your lashes easily and let the curl last longer, heat up the eyelash curler using a blow dryer. Hold the curler right next to the dryer for about 5 seconds. Be reminded that heat can cause damage on these delicate hair strands. The concept works like a curling iron or flat iron so make sure the curler is not too hot. Test the warmth at the back of your hand first before using it to curl the lashes.

15. We’ve all had our “panda eyes” moment because of smudging eyeliner. If you want to avoid this, it is best to use waterproof gel or liquid eyeliner. But, there’s downside, it is hard to take it off by the end of the day. If you decide to use regular eyeliner, set it with powder eye shadow or loose powder to keep it in place. Also, try pressing some translucent powder under the eyeliner of your bottom lashes to prevent the liner from smudging.

Now it’s time to put these tips into practice!

Did you know that only about 24% of your eyelashes ever reach full length? That’s because your lashes will sustain damage from curling, cleansing, wearing makeup and encountering environmental elements over time.
