10 Eye Makeup Tips for Big Beautiful Eyes

eye makeup tipsIn some of the most depressing beauty findings in recent history, studies in Sweden found that sleep-deprived people were perceived as less attractive—wait for it—sadder than the same subjects well rested. Annoying, right? After all, “sleep-deprived” includes most of us, since the average woman gets only six and a half hours a night, not the eight doctors say she requires. Clearly, we all need more shut-eye—but in the meantime, we could use a little magic to help us outwit the Swedish data and fake “awake.”

Use these eye makeup tips (and non-makeup tips) to get big beautiful looking eyes.

1) Target those dark circles

Make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep. Drink water throughout the day, dark circles will be more noticeable when you’re dehydrated. These concealer eye makeup tips can help you diminish the appearance of your dark circles. Use concealer underneath and in the corner of the eyes. When you apply concealer to the eye area, make sure you pat in on. Rubbing can damage the sensitive skin under your eye.

2) Moisturize your eyes

Eye creams made for eyes soften lines and lift the upper eyelids, making your eyes appear wider.

3) Shape your eyebrows

You can do this at home or get your brows done professionally. Thin out the brows and keep a slight arch over the brow bone to frame your eyes and make them appear more lifted. If your brows are sparse, opt for brow powder or cream to define your brow line more.

4) Apply a light shade of eye shadow to the base of your eyelid and sweep it over the entire lid

Use a darker shade of shadow in the crease of your lid and blend slightly. For added lift and brightening, dust a little shimmer eye shadow on your brow bone to make your eyes look bigger.

5) Apply a thin line of very light or white eyeliner as close to the lower lash line as you can

Use a very light hand when using white liner. Just under the white, apply a darker shade of eyeliner or apply the shadow you used on the creases of your eyelids as a liner.

6) Line your upper eyelid with eyeliner

You can use the eye shadow you used on the crease of your eyelids on the top lid as close to your natural lash line as you can and soften the line with a Q-tip. Extend the eyeliner beyond the outer corners of your eyes. This line should move upwards a little as well, mimicking a very long eyelash. This technique will make your eyes appear wider, but is a tricky technique to do well. If the eyeliner isn’t applied symmetrically, it can make your eyes look lopsided, so try doing this with a mirror or ask a friend to help initially.

Don’t line your eyes all the way around because your eyes will look smaller. This means avoiding the  classic smokey eye look.  This is not necessarily a bad thing––small eyes can still look mysterious and dramatic, but if you’re looking for eyes that appear wider, that’s not the effect that you want.

When you apply eyeliner on your lower lashes, do it just below the lash line, not inside the rim. In particular, don’t let the line come all the way to the inner corner of your eye.

7) Highlight the corners of your eyes

Dab a bit of highlighter or light eye shadow in the corners of your eyes for instantly bigger eyes.

8) Use an eyelash curler

Use an eyelash curler to lift your lashes up and out, making them look longer and more noticeable on their own. Add a curling or volumizing mascara to make your eye lashes appear longer, thicker and more defined. An even better solution to add length and volume to your lashes is to invest in a lash serum, like Infinite Lash.

9) Get rid of redness

Use eye drops if you have a problem with dry or red eyes. Red eyes automatically make you appear tired, older and they make your eyes look smaller. If you have chronic dry eyes, your optometrist can recommend eye drops. Or you can use over the counter drops to get the redness out.

9) Get rid of puffiness

Reduce any puffiness in your eyes as swelling in the skin  around your eyes can make them look smaller. Make sure that you’re getting plenty of sleep whenever possible; washing your face with cold water also reduces puffiness and inflammation around the eyes.  If that doesn’t alleviate the redness or puffiness try using an eye cream or serum with green tea in it or taking a supplement that is meant for skin.  The caffeine in eye cream will act as a diuretic and whisk away any fluid build-up or water retention and the anti-oxidant properties will take away any inflammation, Infinite Lash is a great eyelash serum to try, as it has all of these ingredients.

Diet can also affect the eye area and one of the easiest ways to eliminate puffiness is to reduce your salt intake. Too much salt leads to water retention, which leads to puffiness around the eye area and can also affect the entire face. Drinking plenty of water can help with this. Daily water intake helps to flush out any extra water and salt we might be holding onto which will  brighten up our complexion, helping us look more wide-eyed and fresh.

10) Stay Hydrated

The simple act of drinking water can do wonders for our overall skin, but did you know that drinking water actually helps brighten the eyes as well? A daily intake of 8-10 glasses of water clears our bodies of toxins and wastes that can cause our skin and eyes to not look as bright and fresh as they should. It is important to flush out anything that our skin doesn’t need.

As with any of these eye makeup tips, practice makes perfect and you may find you have to try a few of these suggestions before you find the ones that work best for you.  You may also find that all of these beauty tips work at different times of the year and in different situations so be aware of what is going on in your body and how it affects your appearance. Also, keep in mind that as the seasons change, our skin changes with it and we might need to adjust some of these tips and tricks to make them work for our needs at any moment.

Utilizing different eye makeup tips for your specific eye shape along with using shades that brighten or enhance your eye color can go a long way.  Pay attention to times when you notice your eyes looking especially fantastic or days when you get compliments from friends or family.  Loved ones will usually be the first to notice changes and are the most forward with comments on whether or not the new techniques suit you. Since they say your eyes are the windows to your soul lets make sure they look as fantastic as they can!
